The Funeral
- One week after Mette's death, her funeral was held in a several hundred year old church--in the small (the only grocery store, gas station and post office is in the same building) town of Glud Denmark
- I got there almost an hour early, to spend some time alone . . . and was kinda shocked at the amount of flowers . . . but, was unable to be alone because more flowers were arriving all the time
- The sky was grey all morning, around noon it was snowing, and just after the service started the sun burst through the windows just as a line was sung about the sun rising in the east--there were many knowing glances as the sun came in--for, if Mette could have ordered the weather it would have been snow and sunshine
- The church had to put out extra chairs for the overflowing crowd
- Six people carried the coffin from the church to the grave. I carried one corner, not the most often thing for a husband to do--but, I had the strength (physically and emotionally) and I thought it was the last physical thing I could do for her body. And, David (my oldest) was near and watching to step in should I fail to complete the task. Two of Mette's best girl friends, their husbands and our dentist friend were the other five.
- We had arranged for room for 65 folks to meet at a cafe afterwards for a few sandwiches, cookies and coffee--the place had 80 chairs and all were used
- That gathering, while not a party, had many of our friends seeing each other once again, and remembering "the good old days" with a smile . . . and, sometimes a tear
On Thule:
- At the funeral there were 20 or 30 folks from Thule Greenland (where Mette and I met on 9 June 1988)
- Some who left have left Thule for good, and some who happened to be home on vacation
- And flowers from others, still there
- I miss that place and those times
